Writer: Maddie HebertMaddie Hebert

Joining an elite summer basketball team for is a big decision. It has a significant impact on your growth, development, and future opportunities. With so many select summer basketball teams, you need to know that each organization and coach has their own structure and philosophy. Each team provides a different experience in terms of basketball player development and competition. So how can you be sure you're joining a basketball team that aligns with your objectives as a basketball player? As with any major decision, the secret is to know what you want to gain and to do your research—spend time observing.

Watching is key- you can tell a lot through a little observation

Take time to watch the select summer basketball teams you're interested in playing with. Attend events and games to get a sense of the team's cohesiveness, their playing style, and how the coach interacts with players. No one wants to join a select summer basketball team and sit the bench. You also don't want to join a team and feel invaluable. Watching a basketball team will tell you if they rely on 5-6 players for the entire game or if they rotate all 10 players. Let what you see do the talking. Don't rely solely on what you're being told.

Playing time is crucial. Some select summer basketball teams may prioritize a small core group of players, while others focus on developing everyone. If you're looking for a team that will help you grow as a basketball player, pay attention to whether all team members are getting opportunities to play.

Assess the team's playing style

What system do you thrive in? Style of play can tell you a lot about a select summer basketball team's function. Understanding what kind of system the team uses will help you determine whether it aligns with your strengths or areas you can improve.

Get a feel for the coaching style

The coach-athlete relationship is underrated. Your coach will be an influencer in your life. What will you learn from them? How will he or she influence you? Will their philosophy align with other influencers already connect with you, acting as a reinforcement? Will they make you feel seen and supported? Will they be a great resource and guide on and off the court?

Observe how coaches communicate with players. Notate how they handle on court conflicts, victories, and loses. Every athlete is different and responds differently. Know what you need.

Select summer basketball teams aren’t the same—so ask questions

After you've spent time witnessing teams in action, ask the appropriate questions to ensure you’re well informed. Here are a few questions to consider:

What is the team’s development philosophy?

How often do they practice, and what’s the intensity of the training?

What are the expectations for playing time and player roles?

How do the coaches support athletes' growth, both on and off the court?

What is the team’s historical record with player success (e.g., do players move on to higher-level teams or receive athletic scholarships for college)?

The more questions you ask, the more understanding you have. Don’t be afraid to ask the community- current and former members. They know first hand.

Trust your instincts

Choosing the right select summer basketball team is about finding a place where you can thrive, as a basketball player and a person. Understand that you’re choosing an environment that will shape your athletic future. When you find the right fit, you’ll know it.
